UK Parliament highlights EasyMinings solutions

When the British Parliament called for scientific evidence for efficient use and management of nitrogen in the environment, Pär Larshans, Sustainability Director at Ragn-Sells, was invited to contribute EasyMining's perspective. In his submission, he emphasises how the recycling of nitrogen and phosphorus can be key to reducing both import dependence and climate impact – and how technologies like Aqua2N can play a crucial role.

"It is encouraging that our solutions are being recognised in this context. It confirms the need for new ways to capture resources that would otherwise be lost," says Simon Warnquist, Sales Engineer for Aqua2N at EasyMining.

The background for the parliament’s inquiry is the increasing eutrophication of the UK's waterways, where treated wastewater contributes significantly to emissions. Achieving environmental goals requires new methods of handling nutrients – including through recycling.

In his written submission to the House of Lords, Pär Larshans demonstrates how modern wastewater treatment plants can be transformed into resource plants that not only purify but also recycle important substances such as nitrogen and phosphorus. Technologies like EasyMining’s Aqua2N and Ash2Phos make this possible.

Key points from the submission:

  • Economic benefits of nutrient recovery: Upgrading wastewater treatment plants to recover nitrogen and phosphorus adds new revenue streams, reduces energy costs, and decreases dependency on fossil-based fertilizers.

  • Policy for nutrient circularity: Transitioning from a waste-focused to a resource-focused system is essential, with changes in legislation to encourage nutrient recovery and ensure circular flows.

  • Reducing import dependence: The UK’s reliance on imported phosphorus makes the case for domestic recovery even more urgent. Current regulations hinder the growth of circular phosphorus production, but reform could bolster security and sustainability.

Recycling nitrogen and phosphorus can play a decisive role in reducing climate impact, creating circular flows, and reducing the UK’s dependence on imported resources – but the challenges are global. EasyMining’s technology offers solutions that can be applied far beyond the UK’s borders.

"This recognition shows that nutrient recycling isn’t just an environmental necessity — it’s a strategic opportunity. With technologies like Aqua2N and Ash2Phos, we can turn costly emissions into valuable resources, helping countries like the UK meet climate goals while strengthening supply resilience," says Simon Warnquist.
